Pavilion lost to Victory by a single shot in challenge shield

Worthing Pavilion lost by a single shot to the Victory club from Portsmouth in the London & Southern Counties challenge shield. The knockout tournament is played home and away by four rinks of four across 18 ends. On aggregate, Victory won by 65 shots to 64, with the outcome decided by a deflected wood on the final end. The Pavilion home four of Jeremy Simpson, John Winkley, Garry Olver and skip James Brennan raced into an early 6-0 lead and were never caught, running out 16-11 winners. On the second home rink, Tony Beale, Arthur White, Keith Wadhams and Bill Murphy started slowly in a tight encounter. They went ahead on the tenth end and were four shots clear with two ends to play. Victory came back strongly to tie the game 18-18. Ray Leggett, Russ Doherty, Mick Patching and Mark Strong were 7-0 up after two ends on the Victory rink. They were overhauled by an eight-shot burst in three ends and, despite winning four of the final five ends, lost 18-15. The result was identical on the second away rink after a contrasting game. Graham Morrey, Francis Fahey, Colin Davey and Simon Davey trailed 10-0 after four ends, then gradually closed the gap to be only two shots down with three to play. Victory scored another three and, although Pavilion matched that on the final end, it was all in vain.
