Pavilion win opening matches in Egham and Vivienne tournaments
Worthing Pavilion started their campaign in the Egham Trophy, a knockout tournament for mixed teams of 16, with an impressive victory by 104 shots to 61 against Horsham. The Egham is played home and away on four rinks, initially across eight English regions, with a total of 161 clubs entering this season. Pavilion's top rink was Chris Cheeseman, Linda Farley, Jamie Dunk and skip James Brennan, who led from start to finish at home and won 37-15. Julie Woods, Ann Button, Warwick Davis and skip John Frew won 27-13 at home and again were never behind. On the away rinks, Leah Hawkins, Sue Pearson, Mick Patching and skip Mark Strong won 21-15, though they were behind until scoring a five on the 11th end. Pat Edmonds, Keira Dunk, Danny Minter and skip Simon Davey battled through to win 19-18 after the lead changed five times in their game. In the area quarter-final on November 12, Pavilion will play home and away against a team from Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The Vivienne Trophy is another national competition, this time played by teams of four triples, and Pavilion beat Preston 62-52 in their preliminary round tie. On the home rinks, Ange Gatland, Kathy Byrnes and skip Marina Crayston won 19-9, scoring two fours in the second half of the game. Pat Edmonds, Ann Button and skip Sue Gubbins took five of the last six ends to win 16-12. On the away rinks, Julie Woods, Lynn Down and skip June Lewis drew 15-15, securing the draw by scoring a shot on the final end. Chris Cheeseman, Gill Harrisson and skip Linda Farley dropped four shots on the decisive 16th end and went on to lose 16-12. Pavilion's next opponents will be Eastbourne and District on November 9.
